Let’s Haul Out (Storm Edition)

If you’ve not done so yet, or think you’re out of the danger zone, it’s best to get a refresher course.

When it comes to hauling out before storm season, the earlier the better. Businesses, like McCotters Marina and Boatyard in Washington, North Carolina, start allowing owners to reserve spots for their boats in the spring. Some reservations open as early as January, according to owner Mark Henley, and can last all year. “This enables us to know the types and sizes we are committed to haul, so we have stands and space,” he says, not to mention peace of mind for customers.

“We advise to anchor out with properly sized ground tackle and chafe gear,” Henley says, as well as advising boaters not to stay on board. On top of a full range of services, including slip rentals, restoration, detailing, mechanical and more, McCotters also offers a ferry service to get people back to shore for those that anchor out early.

Other advisements by Henley and the McCotters’ team when getting ready to haul out:

  • Remove all canvas and sails before rough weather arrives.

  • Secure all loose gear.

  • Remove transom plugs and keel plugs so water can drain.

  • Leave batteries fully charged so bilge pumps will operate.

  • Be aware boats can fill with water on land from blowing rain and leaks.

Bad inland flooding can often make this worse, making roads impassable for owners trying to get to their boats. “We are very lucky to have wonderful and understanding customers,” Henley says, who make this part of storm season a bit breezier.

Weathering storms never gets easier, but educating yourself and listening to professionals can often make up the difference. “[I] do not know of any way to [fully] storm proof. Do know that being prepared and having a plan ahead of time pays off,” Henley states.
