Swansboro Fishing Report – September & October Outlook
Fall is one of the best times of year to fish the Crystal Coast, and the waters around Swansboro really come alive as cooler temperatures arrive. As water temperatures begin to drop, baitfish become more concentrated and nearly every gamefish in the area feeds aggressively, making September and October excellent months to target a wide variety of species.
Speckled trout fishing improves steadily throughout September and often reaches its peak in October. Early in the season, focus on creek mouths, docks, and deeper marsh channels near the inlets where moving water concentrates shrimp and baitfish. Soft plastics, suspending twitch baits, and live shrimp under a slip cork are all productive. As water temperatures continue to cool, trout begin pushing further into the headwaters of local creeks and rivers, where they'll typically hold deeper and feed a little slower. Live bait becomes especially effective for locating larger schools and targeting bigger fish.
Red drum remain one of the most dependable inshore species throughout the fall. Small schools can be found around grass flats, oyster bars, and marsh edges as they begin their seasonal movement toward the surf. On higher tides, look for fish cruising flooded grass in search of shrimp and finger mullet. As the tide falls, concentrate on creek mouths, oyster points, and deeper holes where bait is funneled out of the marsh. Topwater plugs and soft plastics will catch plenty of fish, but a Carolina-rigged chunk of fresh cut mullet continues to be one of the most consistent producers.
Black drum and sheepshead continue to hold around docks, bridges, rock jetties, and other hard structure. Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, and sand fleas are all dependable baits, with live shrimp offering the best chance at catching a variety of species.
Spanish mackerel remain active throughout September, especially on calm mornings when birds are working schools of bait. Trolling small spoons or casting metal jigs into breaking fish can produce fast action.
King mackerel become more common near the beaches, artificial reefs, and live-bottom areas as October progresses, with slow-trolled live menhaden remaining the top bait.
Bluefish continue providing exciting action around the inlet and beaches, readily attacking spoons, metal jigs, and topwater plugs.
Whether you prefer chasing trout in the creeks or chasing kings just off the beach, fall offers some of the most consistent and enjoyable fishing of the year around Swansboro.
